BYOMKESH BAKSHI

Byomkesh Bakshi is a fictional detective in Bengali literature created by Sharadindu Bandyopadhyay. The advocate-turned-littérateur Bandyopadhyay was deeply influenced by the different Sherlock Holmes, Hercule Poirot and Father Brown stories as well as the "tales of ratiocination" produced by Edgar Allan Poe. He was, however, concerned with how the Indian and Bengali fictional detectives created between 1890 and 1930 had failed to exist as something other than mere copies of the Western (and particularly English) fictional detectives. The stories of Dinendra Kumar Ray's Robert Blake, Panchkari Dey's Debendra Bijoy Mitra or Swapan Kumar's Deepak Chatterjee were almost always set in London or in Kolkata which was identifiably the British metropolis. It was almost as a postcolonial response that Sharadindu Bandyopadhyay introduced the Bengali 'bhadrolok' (gentleman) sleuth Byomkesh Bakshi and Ajit Banerjee (Byomkesh's associate and narrator) in "Pather Kanta" in 1932, and began to write of them as investigating in an Indian metropolis - the capital of British India until 1911 - that has had been thoroughly Indianised. Initially serialized in the literary magazine Basumati, the stories and novels were all eventually published in hardcover editions, the first being Byomkesher Diary.

Laurel and Hardy

Laurel and Hardy were the popular American-based comedy team of thin, British-born Stan Laurel (1890-1965) and heavy, American-born Oliver Hardy (1892-1957). They became famous during the early half of the 20th century for their work in motion pictures and also appeared on stage throughout America and Europe.

The two comedians worked together briefly in 1920 on The Lucky Dog. After a period appearing separately in several short films for theHal Roach studio during the 1920s, they began appearing in movie shorts together in 1926. Laurel and Hardy officially became a team the following year, and soon became Hal Roach's most famous and lucrative stars. Among their most popular and successful films were the features Sons of the Desert (1933), Way Out West (1937), and Block-Heads (1938)[1] and the shorts Big Business (1929), Liberty(1929), and their Academy Award-winning short, The Music Box (1932).[2]

MAHABHARAT

Manuscript illustration of the Battle of Kurukshetra

The Mahābhārata (Devanāgarīमहाभारत) is one of the two major Sanskrit epics of ancient India, the other being the Rāmāyaṇa. The epic is part of the Hindu itihāsa (literally "history"), and forms an important part of Hindu mythology.

It is of immense importance to the culture in the Indian subcontinent, and is a major text of Hinduism. Its discussion of human goals (arthaor purpose, kāma or pleasure, dharma or duty, and moksha or liberation) takes place in a long-standing tradition, attempting to explain the relationship of the individual to society and the world (the nature of the 'Self') and the workings of karma.

With more than 74,000 verses, long prose passages, and about 1.8 million words in total, the Mahābhārata is one of the longest epic poemsin the world. [1] It is roughly ten times the size of the Iliad and Odyssey combined, roughly five times longer than Dante's Divine Comedy, and about four times the size of the Ramayana. Including the Harivaṃśa, the Mahabharata has a total length of more than 90,000 verses.

VIKRAM AUR BETAL

Introduction
The legend says that King Vikramaditya, in order to fulfil a vow,
was required to remove a corpse of betaal from a treetop and
carry it on his shoulder to another place in silence.
Enroute, the spirit of Betaal (in the corpse) used to narrate a
story to the king and after completing the story Betaal would
pose a query that if he (The king) knew the answer, was bound
to respond lest he will break his head into thousand pieces.
But if he does speak out, he would break the vow of silence and
Betaal would fly back to the treetop, leaving the king inches short
